Ithaca College and Cornell and Colgate Universities – GREAT events!

The week of April 7th saw 3 events in upstate NY that broadly featured entrepreneurship!

On April 8th, we had a huge UVANY meeting/event at Ithaca College that featured student pitches from 9 different upstate colleges/universities and a keynote by Hamdi Ulukaya, the CEO of Chobani.  He was fantastic!  Here are 3 press hits that give all the details:  Press 1, Press 2, Press 3.

On April 10th and 11th, Cornell University held it annual Entrepreneurship@Cornell Celebration.   Here is a link to the schedule.   Key features were the eLab Demo Day (eLab is Cornell’s student business accelerator; see live stream link here – start at minute 10), a moderated discussion with Jeff Boyd, the current Chairman and former CEO of Priceline, and recognition of the 2014 Cornell Entrepreneur of the Year, Greg Galvin.

And finally, kudos to the Colgate University entrepreneurship team for hosting a great event called Entrepreneurship Weekend on April 11th and 12th.  Here is a video clip of the featured panel, which had a star studded cast, including Ashton Kutcher.

What a powerhouse eship week!

2013 in Review

Happy New Year everyone!!  The WordPress.com stats folks prepared a 2013 annual report for IthacaVC.  Has some funny facts in it.  My stretch goal remains Fred Wilson in terms of community :).

Here’s an excerpt from the report:

The concert hall at the Sydney Opera House holds 2,700 people. This blog was viewed about 12,000 times in 2013. If it were a concert at Sydney Opera House, it would take about 4 sold-out performances for that many people to see it.

Enjoy your New Year’s Celebration!

Fabulous Startup Book List

OnlyOnce is a great startup blog that Matt Blumberg writes (I don’t know Matt).  Today, Matt published a great list of books called the Startup CEO “Bibliography”.  It is an awesome list that should be shared widely.  In addition, the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Institute at Johnson also has a list of Blogs & Books that is worth checking out (there is some overlap with Matt’s list).

Here is Matt’s list in full (his blog post obviously also lists them out):

And don’t forget Matt’s own book, Startup CEO:  A Field Guide to Scaling Up Your Business.

StartFast Syracuse

Yesterday I visited StartFast up in Syracuse with my VC partner Jennifer and Ithaca-based digital media pro Ken Rother.  StartFast is a Tech Stars affiliated accelerator, and it is a testament to what human drive can accomplish.  Not to belabor the point, but Syracuse is not known being a hot bed of startups.  That is changing.  Nasir Ali, Martin Babinec and Chuck Stormon have launched (and now Nasir and Chuck are running) a great program.  This is the second full year of its operation.

We met with teams originally from Los Angeles, Florida, Toronto, Texas….and Syracuse.  All have viable business concepts and are pivoting and working away.  The space is just what you would expect at an accelerator – open, high ceilings, full of din (not food, but noise).

My favorite StartFast company so far is Calester, which simply pushes an events calendar to you based on your own calendar availability.  Visiting Ithaca?  Calester will tell you what is going on that fits your schedule.  All in one spot so you don’t have to look in more than one spot.  Simple and useful.  And it will populate your calendar too.

Thanks to Nasir, Chuck and Martin for StartFast!
